Paced by Best On Ground Austen Kugler, devastating work at forward from Aaron Crittenden, and the big leg of Jake Keglor, the St. Petersburg Swans overwhelmed the Suncoast Suns today in St. Pete, running out 18.9.117 – 4.14.38 winners in Major League Footy Florida Winter League action.

The result sees the Swans (3-1) claim the winter metro circuit’s Winter Championship.

Coming into the Winter Final undefeated, atop the ladder and leading the 7-side competition in scoring and percentages, the Suns had opportunities throughout.

Time and time again, those opportunities were turned back by the side’s errant kicking, with problematic days for USA Revolution Men’s National Teamer Dustin Jones, and USA Liberty veteran Holly Wenrich.

Basil Benjamin, Amaran Subramanian and Greg Bray were valiant in adverse circumstances, with Subramanian beginning to find his way and ruck, and Benjamin providing the Suns with their only consistency on the attack.

St. Petersburg, however, posted no fewer than 25-points in each frame on the day, with Crittenden dominating in the front on his way to one of the best individual offensive performances on the winter season.

The absence of Suns’ winter captain Ken Scheidt forced rookie Joe Caravella into high-pressure situations on the Suncoast backline, while the Swans’ Jason Kofender made several second-half clearances that denied seemingly easy chances for the Suns.

The Inaugural Season of Major League Footy – The Florida Winter League of Australian Football – saw 36 players participate in co-ed, full-contact ‘metro rules’ footy in 10 matches played November – February.

The St. Petersburg Swans will host Orlando AFC Saturday, March 11 at Four ‘N Twenty Field at Campbell Park. Game time is 7 PM. Pre-season matches are free. The match will be broadcast live on radiostpete.com with Rich Libero and Miro Gladovic calling the action.
