TIGES, LIONS SET TO TANGLE UNDER LIGHTS
A spot in the Major League Footy Championship Finals Series could be on the line when the Florida Lions (3-3, 12 points) host the Lakeland Tigers (2-2, 8 points) in a twilight double-header of Aussie Fives footy, Saturday night at Largo Sports Complex in Largo, Florida.
Ball up for Game One is 7 PM Eastern.
Should Florida sweep Saturday night’s proceedings, they’ll stand clear of the rest of the pack, while closing the gap with St. Petersburg, who currently lead the ladder with an impressive 28 points.
Meanwhile, the Tigers come in with a chance to overtake the Lions with a sweep, while a split would see Lakeland at least gain hold of the third spot on the table.
In the MLF Championship Finals format, only the top three sides advance, with the #2 and #3 seeds meeting in a Preliminary Final. The winner of that playoff match then moves on to meet the #1 seed in the Final.
With St. Petersburg standing at 7-1 – but with only a double-header vs. the Kangas remaining on their slate – the Lions would seem well-positioned to close that distance in a flash, should they take the broom to Lakeland Saturday.
The Tigers could be buttressed by the return of skipper Pat Bilder in Saturday’s action.
The American footy veteran has missed the past three weeks of MLF action, dealing with injuries and an unrelated illness.
The Lions will counter with the return on Queensland gun Ben McIntosh, expected back after a European sojourn.
