With a resounding 120-84 win over the West Side Bombers (1-3), the Phoenix Scorpions (4-1) have risen after a season-opening loss to win four straight – sealing the 2018 Major League Footy Western Conference minor premiership.
Locked in a tit-for-tat with the scrappy Tombstone Marshals throughout the Summer Series, the Scorpions leveraged a schedule quirk in being first past the post.
With the minor premiership secured, the Scorpions will take on the Tempe Devils (0-3) in the Summer Series finale in Tempe, Saturday, July 28.
The results of that match now will have no impact on the ladder, as the Marshals needed the Scorpions to lose out in their final two contests – a fate Phoenix avoided in posting the season’s highest score in the Valley of the Sun.
Saturday’s result also pushes the Scorpions past the Miami Saints, and into the #2 seed on the overall MLF ladder, trailing the St. Petersburg Swans by 4 points.
Phoenix can overtake St. Petersburg – at least for the time-being – with a win next Saturday over Tempe, leaving the Swans and Saints to wait for their August 11 rematch to once again re-shuffle the seedings.
